Photodynamic laser therapy

This innovative form of laser treatment is used in periodontitis treatment to remove bacteria from the surfaces of the tooth necks and roots. It is used as a supplementary procedure following conventional periodontal pocket treatment.

The advantages of photodynamic laser therapy:

  • We achieve particularly good therapeutic success: The bacteria are removed more thoroughly and more sustainably than with other methods alone.
  • Photodynamic laser therapy is minimally invasive, the entire treatment is gentle and more comfortable for you.
  • Surrounding healthy tissue remains excluded because of the targeted effect, which is limited to bacteria.
  • In many cases, this therapy allows us to dispense with the use of antibiotics or surgical measures.

How Photodynamic Laser Therapy works:

  1. In the first step, a blue dye solution is placed in the gum and bone pockets. The dye particles attach themselves to the outer wall of the bacteria, staining them.
  2. The gum or bone pockets are rinsed to remove excess solution.
  3. Finally, exposure is carried out with a gentle therapy laser. The dye particles react to the incoming laser light, resulting in the formation of active oxygen. This damages the bacterial membrane and destroys the bacteria.
